Former Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed has said that Maldives urgently requires a government that is conscious of the nation’s pulse and the aspirations of the people. He further expressed that the current government is incapable of evaluating the feelings and recognizing the aspirations of the people. Dr. Shaheed made the statements in response to a question posed by Miadhu Daily on the subject of the current economic crisis facing the country.
“Unless we bring an end to President Gayoom’s rule, the Maldivian people will not have any economic satisfaction; there are many reasons for this, this government has no interest in the welfare of the people, this country needs a government that respects the needs and the wishes of the people and one that know how important it is to recognize the needs of the people” former foreign minister said.
He further said that Maldives is considered number two country in the region which has high differences between the poor and the rich and that if the stability in any country is directly related to the gap between the rich and the poor.
“Maldives is number two in the region which has high differences between the poor and the rich, in any country there will be no peace or stability, if the gap gets wider, we are now facing this situation, but our government is not interested” said Dr. Shaheed.
Dr. Shaheed said the country was on the verge of facing starvation and hunger and called on the government to take sold and practical measures to bring end to the situation.
Dr. Shaheed further highlighted that neither the president nor a cabinet minister participated at the recent summit organized by FAO to save countries facing starvation and hunger. He said this illustrated the government’s lack of interest on improving the country’s economic situation.
