Amidst widespread allegations of violations of Civil Service Law by Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) during the second congress of the party held recently at Dharubaaruge, Elections Office has confirmed to Miadhu Daily that Civil Service Commission (CSC) has requested for a listing of the participants of the congress.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Assistant Director General of Commissioner of Elections office Mohamed Tholal said that elections commission has been asked by CSC to provide a list of DRP members who attended the conference. However he informed that the Office of the Election Commissioner does collect such information.
“They have asked us to provide a listing, but we do not collect such information, it is maintained by the respective parties, and we do not collect this information” Tholal said.
Tholal further said it is the civil service law which prohibits civil servants from engaging in politics and not the political party regulations.
“It is prohibited by Civil Service Law as such what ever action that may be required must be taken by CSC” Tholal informed.
Civil Service Commission had earlier informed that the commission on the 15 th of this month had asked for a listing of the DRP participants from the elections commissions office.
Civil Service Commissioner Mohamed Fahmy said although civil servants are allowed to participate in the general or ordinary meeting of political parties; they cannot participate in any special or extraordinary meeting.
The main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) issued a statement which condemned DRP’s involvement of civil servants in the party’s second congress. The statement called on DRP to refrain from engaging civil servants in politics in violation of civil service laws in the party second congress.
