EU concerned over delays in establishing independent institutions

The European Union (EU) has issued a statement expressing great concern over the delays in establishing independent institutions in Maldives.

The European Commission’s delegation assigned to Maldives and Sri Lanka issued the statement last Friday and said that the establishment of independent institutions was required to ensure that the multiparty election planned to be held before 10 October was held in a free and fair manner.

The statement said that the EU was concerned that the constitution be ratified as soon as possible so that preparations for the elections can be made in a “timely, transparent and credible manner”. They also noted that the Maldivian Government had repeatedly assured the EU that the planned presidential elections would go ahead as scheduled.

The statement also mentioned that the EU was ready to provide any help required to establish the independent institutions and called on all the parties to work together to hold a free and fair election. In that regard the statement requested the media to create awareness about voting and to give fair exposure to all the candidates.
