Honorable Qasim Ibrahim Resigns from DRP Vice president

Three days after sending his resignation from the cabinet, Honorable Qasim Ibrahim resigned from the DRP (Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party) and also he had resigned from the party. He confirmed the resignation today.

Just as the news of the prolific figure resigning from the DRP the coordinator from the party also confirmed Qasim leaving his membership. Mr. Ibrahim Shafiu, the party’s spokes person said that the party’s rules say that if a member or a figure submits his or her resignation the member will be automatically resigned from the party. He said the Vice president had sent a letter to the administration and if it would have been a resignation letter he would have now left the party. He said he had not seen the text on the letter.

Earlier Shafiu had said that if Qasim resigns from the party it would be a huge loss to the party and when asked how they would react this time, he said when a member resigns it’s a loss. Especially when a high profile political figures from the party abandons his membership it would be a huge loss but the party did not believe the impact cannot be mended.

The basic regulation of the party implies the election of an empty seat in the deputy leadership would only be voted in the national congress meeting which the congress only gathers biennial. The party ended its congress just a day before Honorable Qasim quit from the cabinet.

The resignation of Qasim leaves another year of a vice presidents seat empty and only two days ago the party had selected Hamdhoon Hameed, the nephew of its leader Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom as the one of the two male vice presidents.

Shafiu said that an interim deputy can be selected but an election to fill the post would be in two years.

When the DRP leader was asked at the party’s congress about the resignation of Qasim from the cabinet, the Leader answered from the presidents’ view, that His Excellency would meet Honorable Qasim before he made any conclusion of his resignation.
