Finance Minister Gasim Ibrahim submitted the resignation letter the previous Thursday although his resignation was accepted last Tuesday. On resignation, Gasim said that some government ministers were not cooperating in the projects mentioned in the budget to generate income.
Last Sunday, Tourism Minister Dr. Mahmood Shaugee confirmed his resignation from the post of Tourism Minister. Dr. Shaugee gave no details about his resignation, but said that he resigned as there were some differences in opinion about his work.
After speculation for a few days, trade and economic development minister Mohamed Jaleel also submitted his resignation last Thursday.
Earlier, he has said that Maldives would go under deep recession if the government doesn’t change its trade and economic policies. He also told the People’s Majlis and the press that some government ministers didn’t give cooperation and assistance in the most important income generating projects mentioned in the budget.
We were unable to contact Chief govt. spokesman Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) to get his comment regarding the matter.
According to very reliable sources, more ministers are to resign soon. These sources say that it has been some time since the Fisheries Minister Hussain Hilmy also submitted his resignation, but he is remaining in the post as the President did not accept his resignation yet. Hilmy was unavailable to comment on the matter.
Some political analysts say that there would be more problems among the cabinet once the constitution is ratified or once the President Maumoon chooses his running mate.
