HRCM calls for a commission to verify election results

President of Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) Ahmed Saleem has called on Elections Commission to establish a separate commission to verify the validity of the forthcoming presidential elections results. Saleem made the call yesterday speaking at a news conference held at the HRCM office.

Saleem said that Human Rights Commission would like to see the forthcoming presidential elections be held in a free and fair manner in an atmosphere free from intimidation and fear.

Saleem stated that the constitution of Maldives ratified by the president on 7 August 2008 is a ‘rights based constitution’ and that it guarantees wider freedom , more rights and powers to the people as never before in the history of the country.

President of HRCM Saleem speaking at the news conference expressed regrets and concern over the inclusion of hardened criminals in the recent presidential pardon issued last Wednesday. He said releasing these men to the society without having fully served their sentences is a matter of great concern.

Commenting on the recent remarks of National Narcotics Control Bureau (NNCB) over the commission‘s report on the conditions of the rehabilitation facility, commission member Ahmed Abdul Kareem said that the NNCB’s claims that commission’s report is inaccurate is out of the question. Kareem insisted that the commission’s report is ‘100 percent accurate’. He further pointed that it is the objective of the commission to find out and report on the discrepancies in the system as well as to offer advice on corrective measures and that it was best to take the commission’s report in the spirit of reform and to implement the corrective measures suggested as soon as possible.

HRCM yesterday also launched its first newsletter titled ‘Haqqu’ (Right). ‘Haqqu’ is a quarterly newsletter that aims to raise awareness on human rights issues and to disseminate news on the work of the commission. It will be distributed freely nation wide.
Information at the news conference was given by President of HRCM Ahmed Saleem, Vice President Mohamed Zahir and Commission Members Marium Azra, Ahmed Abdul Kareem and Maajidha Majudhy.
