Legislation required for university - Shaugy


Vice Chancellor of Maldives University Dr. Mahmoud Shaugy has said that work of the university is at a stage that it requires the protection of a comprehensive law. He made the statement in a special interview given to Miadhu Daily.

“I have completed what ever that can be done for the time being and I have informed the concerned ministry, a very comprehensive draft law has been prepared, but it has to be submitted to Majlis at the earliest” Dr. Shaugy said.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily earlier Rector of Maldives College of Higher Education Dr. Hassan Hameed said that Shaugy’s concepts and thinking on forming the university are good and that College’s Council has discussed the issue of the proposed legislation. Dr. Hassan Hameed had said that draft legislation was prepared and that no amendments are needed.

President Gayoom first spoke about forming a national University at a graduation ceremony of the Maldives College held at Islamic Center in 2005.

According to sources former higher education Minister Abdulla Yamin had completed most of the paper work necessary for forming the university and that the documentation has been submitted to President Gayoom. Sources say the talks on forming a university faded when Yamin resigned from the cabinet.

According to Dr. Shaugy the national university should an independent entity as in most countries. Dr. Shaugy was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the national university when he resigned from the cabinet. Dr. Shaugy is the former tourism minister and has held several high ranking positions in the education ministry including the position of minister of education.
