The People’s Majlis on Tuesday passed a bill that allowed all inhabited islands in the Maldives to run guest houses on an equal basis.
The bill was proposed by Male’ MP Mohamed Shihab and 32 members voted for it, as per the amendment brought to it by Gaafu Dhaalu atoll MP Abbas Ibrahim. Voting on the bill submitted by Shihab on 7 July took place after it was postponed twice due to lack of quorum.
Shihab’s bill called on the Government to dissolve their policy forbidding islands in the atolls to run guest houses in order to allow the residents to earn a living despite the changes in the economy which led to limited business opportunities and the declining living conditions of the people in the atolls.
Since discussions about the bill had been finished in previous sittings, no members talked about it at Tuesday’s sitting. However, almost all members had in earlier discussions agreed that in order to ensure everyone from all corners of the country benefited from the tourism industry, it was imperative that, just like in Male’, the residents be allowed to run guest houses in their islands.
