The pre registration meeting of National Alliance is to be held on the 30 th of this month at Giyaasuhdheen School, according to Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, the presidential candidate nominated by the party founders.
“The pre registration meeting will be held on Saturday night at Giyaasuhdheen School, all necessary arrangements are underway” Dr. Waheed said.
Dr. Waheed is joined by Dr. Mustapha Luthufy who served with Dr. Waheed in the education ministry for a considerable number of years and briefly held the cabinet portfolio of tourism minister. Dr. Waheed and Dr. Mustapha Luthufy are also joined by many capable, charismatic politicians like Dr. Mohamed Ali.
According to reports Dr. Waheed joins the presidential race has chosen Dr. Luthufy, a native of Addu atoll as his running mate.
Dr. Waheed is a respected and popular political leader who was in the vanguard of the vibrant democratic movement seen in the country in the early 90s. Waheed with his famous election logo of a pointed thumb became so popular he was elected as a member of Male' to the People's Majlis. Dr. Waheed together with many of the leading figures of present political spectrum fought for the cause of more rights good governance and democratic reform during those years. He was an eloquent speaker and a likable personality. Dr. Waheed resigned from the Majlis and left politics to take up a UN post. However, he reemerged in Maldives politics after the reform movement has gained momentum in 2003. He became a key figure of the opposition movement and main opposition party MDP. He contested for the post of the President of MDP in their first congress in 2006, but lost the election. Dr. Waheed returned to his UN post thereafter.
Dr. Waheed has come back to the Maldives politics with his vast experience and knowledge. He has announced his decision to dedicate himself in the service of the nation. Together with some of his friends who are all doctors they started work to form a new political party and that party which they want call National Alliance is about to be formally registered soon. Dr. Waheed has announced his readiness to stand for election for the highest post of the country for which they say he is eminently qualified in a background of the huge popular support he enjoyed about 2 decades ago. The country has changed so much during the period, and Dr Waheed and his friends will have to make a herculean effort to win back that support.
