The President today ratified the Police Act and the Law on General Regulations, at a ceremony held at the President’s Office. Following ratification, the two Acts have been published in the Government Gazette.
After the ratification of the Police Act, in accordance with the Article 3(iii) of this Act, the President signed the papers that will make the Maldives Police Service an institution operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Also, in accordance with the Article 54 (ii) of the Act, the President appointed Mr. Adam Zahir as the Commissioner of Police and Mr. Abdul Shakoor as the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
The Police Act, states the basic regulations relating the mandate, responsibilities, roles and obligations of the Police. It also states the powers vested on the Police, as well as all other regulations regarding the Police.
The Law on General Regulations provides legal support to those regulations that were not established by a legislative enactment, and that are needed for Government administration and to continue providing services to the people.
In a statement to the press after the ratification of the two Acts, the President said that these two Acts are pre-requisites for the ratification of the new Constitution of the country.
