Anni says he believed presidential elections will be free and fair



Presidential Candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has said that he believed this year’s presidential elections will be free and fair.
Speaking at a news conference held at MDP Hargue, Anni said that the people of Maldives and the presidential candidates have been getting ready for this year’s elections for the last 6 months and that he believed that elections will be free and fair. He said he is confident that the presidential elections will be completed before the October 10 th deadline stipulated in the constitution.

Anni said he accepted the results revealed by the government on referendum on system of government for the sake of it, but that he is not willing to do that any more. Anni said that the results revealed by the government on the referendum on system of government was invalid, as claimed by MDP even before and this can now be seen from the eligible voter list. Anni said then number voters’ eligible was 251,000 and now the number has increased to 290,000.

Anni said he believed that DRP leader Gayoom will get 18% or 20 % and that it is unlikely that Gayoom will reach the second phase of the elections. He revealed that an MDP will get an estimated 75% from Male’ and that a survey carried out by MDP shows Jumhoory Coalition’s candidate Qasim Ibrahim at the bottom of the list. He further said the survey shows MDP’s popularity will not fall below 30% in any part of the country. He said that he is fully confident of winning the presidential elections in the first round it self by a landslide.
