MDP incapable of forming a govt. expected by people - Ibra

Social Liberal Party Presidential candidate Male' member Ibrahim Ismail, Ibra has said MDP will not be able to form a government to the expectations of the people of the country. Ibra who was a key partner of the reform movement and first president of the main opposition party MDP said he resigned from the top post of the party after realizing the leadership of the party was not capable of understanding and digesting democratic reforms. This has been amply demonstrated by the manner in which MDP leadership has informed its members how to vote in last Thursday’s crucial election commission members vote.

Ibra who has done extremely well in last Wednesday's TVM live presidential questions and answers program has said he was very disappointed by what he saw in the Majlis on Thursday, how a party which was instrumental in initiating the reforms in the country has taken side with the government party DRP in approving an election commission which he doubts will be independent. Before the vote was taken to approve the transitional election committee, Ibra spoke with lot of passion about how sad he felt for losing the battle for reform by accepting three members loyal to DRP in the election commission. He said free and fair elections was the heart of the reform and the sacrifices they have made but sadly those sacrifices are becoming futile and we are going back to where we started, Ibra warned.

Ibra was speaking to his supporters in Laamu Maamendhoo in his presidential campaign and he criticized the MDP for turning back to the long felt aspirations of the people. The interim election commission was approved on Thursday when members of DRP, MDP and PA. Members of JP only voted against the commission.

Ibra also slammed government party DRP's presidential candidate Maumoon Abdul Gayoom for what he termed as misleading the people in what is not economically feasible. He was referring to the bridge Gayoom promised to construct between Male' and Hulhumale' during the presidential questions and answers. Ibra said building such a bridge at a cost of over 100 millions dollars is not fair to those people living in the atolls. DRP supporters and many people have however welcomed the promise of the bridge, but some said this promise has remained unfulfilled for a long time.
