Minister Ahmed Abdulla resigns

Minister of Environment Energy and Water Ahmed Abdulla has resigned from his cabinet position and from the ruling party, Dhivehi Rahyithunge party (DRP) yesterday.
According to Ahmed Abdulla his decision to resign from the government is mainly due to dissatisfaction with government policies. He also said there is an unbridgeable gap between his thinking, policies and beliefs from that of the government.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily last night, Abdulla said the rift between him and the government has been growing. Although he did not offer any specifics, he said he has always wanted to implement sustainable environment polices.

“I have always wanted to introduce sound and sustainable environment policies, but it was always not supported” Abdulla said.

The resignation of Ahmed Abdulla, one of the most trusted and closest allies of President Gayoom shocked many. Those who have worked with Abdulla and those who know him well, say that he is a kind man who always considered the interest of the people. They say it is a clear sign of the disintegration of President Gayoom’s administration. They also say it marks the beginning of 30 years of autocratic rule and marks a new beginning.

Abdulla who is the longest serving member of cabinet joined in 1993 as the Health Minister. He then went on to become the Information Minister and later went on to serve as Environment, Energy and Water Minister. He also served for many years as Maldives Ambassador accredited to Sri Lanka and India.

Many opposition members claim that former minister’s criticisms of the government, especially from a one who has remained so long in the cabinet and worked so closely with President Gayoom is going to change the political arena of the country. Ahmed Abdulla is also the MP for Hdh atoll.
