Increased number of youth joining Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) as the election draws nearer is a clear indication of the party’s increased popularity and the success it is achieving and it also brightens up the future of the party, Leader and presidential candidate of DRP Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said.
DRP presidential candidate Gayoom made the statement speaking at the ceremony held at Qiyaashuhdheen School to officially launch the website of Maumoon 2008 campaign.
Speaking at the ceremony Leader Gayoom said that DRP is not a party restricted to a certain age group but a party representative of all age groups.
Gayoom said at the recent Presidential Debate organized by Legal Reform Ministry under the Think Nation campaign, the comments and remarks directed at him by some candidates were of personal attacks. He said these allegations were mindless and carries no weight and is aimed at misleading and confusing the people.
Commenting on the policies expressed by some presidential candidates, Leader Gayoom said candidates are promising things beyond their reach. He said promises like imposing death penalty and evicting people out their native island was out of the question. He expressed hope people will not elect such a harsh and uncompassionate leader to rule the country.
DRP Leader’s running mate Ahmed Thasmeen Ali also spoke at the ceremony. In his address Thasmeen rejected the ongoing criticisms of the government fisheries policies. He said these criticisms are all lies aimed to incite hatred towards the government.
Many other DRP members also addressed the ceremony. Council member Mohamed Saleem, member of party’s women’s league Noorubaan Fahmy, member Alim Shukoor, MP for Addu atoll Ibrahim Shareef and renowned actor / comedian/ director Yousuf Rafeeu also addressed the ceremony.
