Anni to be our new President

According to the preliminary results announced by state broadcasting channel TVM, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Presidential Candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has won the Presidential Election.

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Presidential Candidate Maumoon Abdu Gayoom and Anni competed in the 2nd round of the Presidential Election held yesterday as neither of the six candidates who competed in the 1st round of the Presidential Elections held on 8th October this month were able to secure majority of the votes.

Anni secured 54.25% of the votes (97224 votes) which gave him the victory while Maumoon got 82007 votes which is 45.75% of the votes, the preliminary results announced by TVM said. The result of one box was yet to be announced, but it would not bring any change to the results.

In the first round of the election held on 8th of this month, Anni got 25.08% of the votes with 44315 votes. Maumoon secured 40.61% of the votes with 71774 votes. Rest of the votes were split between Dr. Hassan Saeed, Gasim Ibrahim, Umar Naseer and Ibrahim Ismail who competed in the election.

All candidates except Umar Naseer backed Anni and formed the “Wathan edhey gothah” (as the nation wishes) alliance against Maumoon. All candidates voiced the need for a change.

The result of the Presidential Election is a huge blow to President Maumoon who won the previous six Presidential elections with over 90% of the votes. After the first round of this year’s Presidential Elections, Maumoon’s campaign has been saying that they would win the second round of the election with over 80% of the votes.

According to the preliminary results, this marks the end of President Maumoon’s 30 year old regime and Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) is to be the next President of Republic of Maldives.

It is with great honor and sincerity that the team of Jazeera Daily wishes to congratulate the “Wathan edhey gothah” alliance for their success which consists of MDP, National Alliance, Jumhooree Party, Adhaalathu Party, Maldivian National Congress, Social Liberal Party and Dr. Hassan Saeed’s team.
