Male',Maldives: Presidential election Reschedule 28 October 2008

Male',Maldives:The runoff presidential elections date has been brought forward from 29 October 2008 to Tuesday 28 October 2008, according to interim Election Commission (EC).

According to Interim Election Commission (EC) the date was brought forward as on the 29 October, O level examinations are to be held across the country which will cause numerous difficulties to the election commission as a number of polling stations are established inside schools. Election Commission said runoff elections have been brought forward so as not to cause any difficulties to the parents and students.

In this regard Interim Election Commission informed that the runoff presidential elections will be held on the Tuesday 28 October 2008 from 0900 hours to 2000 hours.

According to information received on Wednesday October 29, the previous date on which presidential runoff Election Day were to be held , students will undergo O level Biology paper 1 and 2 and Economics paper 2 examinations.

Election Commissioner Mohamed Ibrahim announcing the first multi party presidential elections said that as none of the candidates who contested in the first multi-party presidential election secured over 50% votes in Wednesday's election, a run-off election between DRP's presidential candidate Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who secured 71,731 (40.63%) and MDP's presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed who secured 44,293 (25.09%) will be held on Wednesday 29 October 2008 from 0900 hours to 2000 hours
