Male',Maldives:Even though DRP presidential candidate Maumoon Abdul Gayoom may be successful in winning the forthcoming presidential runoff elections slated for Tuesday 28 October 2008, it will not be Gayoom who will lead the country but that it will be Gayoom’s brother and leader of People’s Alliance (PA) Abdulla Yamin who will be pulling the strings, presidential candidate Dr. Hassan Saeed has said.
Speaking at a meeting organized by the united alliances of MDP and Jumhoory Party, Dr. Hassan Saeed, who contested in the first round of the presidential elections, held on 8 October 2008, said people who vote Gayoom should be aware know not voting for Gayoom but rather for brother Yamin. Further Hassan said Yamin agreed to back Gayoom after obtaining a written affidavit from Gayoom to that effect.
Hassan also expressed that if people elected Gayoom for another term, Yamin and Gayoom will obtain enough seats in the forthcoming parliamentary elections to obtain a majority in the parliament and amend the constitution to sustain their hold on power.
Hassan warned that if people vote for Gayoom, the people are just electing Gayoom for a 5 year term but for an extended period.
Presidential candidate Dr. Hassan Saeed said democratic principles and values and rule of law cannot be introduced to the country unless the incumbent government is toppled.
He urged all those who voted for him to support and vote for Anni instead of Gayoom in the runoff elections.
