Defamation lawsuit against Adalat leader begins

Civil Court has held the first hearing of the lawsuit filed by former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom against Adhaalath Party (AP) President Sheikh Hussain Rasheed Ahmed on Thursday. Former President Gayoom has pressed charges claiming that Sheikh Husain Rasheed on several occasions has publicly defamed him by saying that he was a not a Muslim.

The initial hearing of the case was earlier cancelled as the accused, Sheikh Hussain Rasheed did not appear in court and judge of the civil court continued the Thursday hearing as the second hearing of the case.

Out of the three representatives of former president Gayoom, only 2 appeared in court; Attorney Ahlan Fahmy and Attorney Dr. Afrasheem Ali. The other representative Sheikh Mohamed Qubad Abu Bakar did not appear in court. Several members of Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) including President of DRP Youth Wing Ahmed Mahlouf were present at the court.

Speaking to after the Thursday hearing, Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed Senior Attorney representing Adhaalath Party President said that Gayoom’s Attorney’s has presented their case and that as the case dealt with religious beliefs he had asked the court to order former president Gayoom to be present in court during the next hearing.

Sheikh Shaheem further informed that he judge has agreed with him that the case was religious in nature and that if necessary he will order former President Gayoom to appear in court.

According to Attorney Ahmed Zaneen Adam the papers filed on behalf of Gayoom showed Theemuge , the Presidential Palace as the residence of the former president and that the person who filled the forms Ahlan Fahmy, despite filling the forms pretending to be a lawyer was not a lawyer. Zaneen also noted that this fact was noted by the judge of the civil court Mohamed Naeem.

Large number of people gathered at Justice Building while the hearing was going on. Some were carrying placards and posters depicting anti Gayoom sentiments.
