Fisheries Minister Meets Bank Managers to Heal Industry Woes

The Ministry for Fisheries and Agriculture held meetings with 3 Banks including two overseas bank Managers today to help fish buyers out of financial depression. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the ministry.

The fishermen in the country has been complaining of finding difficulties to sell their daily catch in a favorable season as many buyers has to deny fishermen because of financial difficulties according to the buyers. The ministry has taken initiative to help fishermen sell their fish through dialogue with fish buyers.

According to one fish buyer they have difficulties in storing the fish as their storage capacity too small. He said they have a floating storage that they had to keep fish until they were able export.

The Ministry of fisheries in a press release said that the discussions with the bankers were positive and the banks the ministry held meetings assured the ministry to help ease financial problems to the fish buyers.

The three banks Fisheries Ministry held talks are Bank of Maldives, Bank of Ceylon and the Habib Bank of Pakistan but the ministry did not say how the banks would help provide financial assistance to fish buyers. The Ministry was not available to give any further detail immediately but said that they would call Haama Daily to provide details on how banks would help ease financial woes fish buying companies poised with.
