Foreign Minister to make an official visit to India

Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed will start an official visit to India on 1 December. This is the first official visit of the Foreign Minister after the new President Mohamed Nasheed assumed office on 11 November since the landmark multiparty presidential election won by the former opposition leader and defeating President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who ruled the country for 30 years.

Dr. Shaheed's visit will be a very important visit to the new Government to further strengthen the close relations between India and Maldives. Maldives maintained excellent bilateral relations under President Gayoom and India has been a major development partner of Maldives. Maldives main tertiary hospital Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital is a donation from the Indian Government and India has trained a large number of Maldivian doctors and health personnel. The Faculty of Engineering is also a gift of Indian Government, while India is also building a Hotel School in the Maldives.

Indian Government is expected to extend more cooperation to Maldives in areas of need for the government of President Nasheed and both governments are expected to forge closer cooperation for developmental needs of Maldives.

Indian Vice President Mohamed Hamid Ansari attended the inauguration of President Mohamed Nasheed on 11 November.
