Govt. shuts down MGTC

Maldivian Government Trade Center (MGTC) located in Singapore has been dissolved, according to a Circular issued by President’s Office.

The Circular, signed by Cabinet Secretary issued on Thursday, detailing the dissolved government ministries and agencies include the government trade center established in Singapore.

Executive Director of President Office Hussain Amir, in an interview given to local newspaper Haveeru, has said that a decision on MGTC staff has not been reached as yet.

MGTC is staffed with 6 people and reports directly to the President’s Office. The main function of the office is to advertise Maldives trade overseas.

The newly inaugurated President Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday dissolved 7 government ministries and formed a new ministry under the name of Ministry of Islamic Affairs. Previous government’s Legal Reform, Information and Arts has been dissolved and some of the function of the ministry is now carried out by Tourism ministry. Legal Reform section of the dissolved information ministry was assigned to Attorney General’s Office. Function of Planning Ministry is now taken over by Finance Ministry, Gender ministry is now dissolved and the functions of the ministry transferred to Health Ministry.

The new government has made various other changes were made to the government administrative structure. The most significant is that the new government has reduced the previous 21 ministries to 14 ministries.
