The president of the republic of Maldives His Excellency Mohamed Nasheed and Madam Laila Ali with the presidents Deputy Mohamed Waheed Hassan Maniku and his wife held a reception on the occasion of the Republic Day. The marking of 41st Republic Day was also attended by foreign dignitaries and members of the political parties.
The foreign guests who arrived on the oath taking ceremony of President Mohamed Nasheed who attended the reception last night proudly conveyed their congratulation to the democratically elected president after 30years of dictatorship. They said that they had seen a humongous change in a short period of time in the Maldives and recognized the sacrificial struggle the president had before he came to take the helm. They also expressed that they saw enormous line of awareness in the country with a harmonized democracy that prevailed in the republic.
A commoner who attended the reception expressed the difference, he experienced as he was able to enter the reception hall for the first time. He said that during the Gayyoom’s regime the reception is a confinement for those who are invited. He said the people were able to go in go out at their will where during the reception of Gayyoom only invitees are permitted to enter the hall before Gayyoom arrives. He said just after Gayyoom arrives the doors are locked and no one is allowed to leave before Gayyoom exits. He also said that every one was able to go and meet the president and shake hands.
