Former Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who ruled the country for 30 years, is the most capable dictator in the world, Special Envoy of President Nasheed, Ibrahim Hussain Zaki has said.

He made the statement at a news conference held at press room Fansavees / Dharubaaruge on Monday while responding to certain remarks of the former President expressed at the recent General Assembly of Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP).

Zaki said the world has yet to see a more capable leader who ran a dictatorship in the name of democracy.

“When he is in Maldives, when he is running the government, he is the dictator, but when he steps out of the country the world saw him as a democratic leader, so is there any other leader who is more capable to run a dictatorship?” Zaki asked.

“What I have to say to President Gayoom is to fully accept democracy and to get acquainted with the principles of democracy” Zaki said. He also said if the former President Gayoom were to speak out, with total disregard to democratic principles, what ever he wants, in this day and age, it will ultimately lead to divisions within the society causing unrest.

In addition, Zaki said that the President elected under the new constitution is from a specific party and as such President Nasheed’s attempts to get his party elected in the forthcoming parliamentary elections should not be an issue.

“This is how it is in other democracies; it is the way of democracy, if President Nasheed does not work to elect his party, who else will? Who else has more right? He will be at the forefront” Zaki expressed.

Zaki also said Gayoom’s thinking in a democracy will be a sad thing and that in multiparty system democracy the ruling party who will be active in elections. In this regard, he said there are nothing else other the country’s laws and the constitution and the tenets of Islam that one has to pay attention to.

Zaki also called on former President not to mislead the people on party system of democratic governance.
