Amendment submitted to waive 50 signatories requirement

The seven member Majlis adhoc committee securitizing the bill on elections has submitted amendment to abolish the 50 signatories’ requirement imposed on candidates contesting parliamentary elections.

In presenting the committee’s report to the Majlis held on Monday, Chairperson of the seven member committee, MP for Meemu atoll Ahmed Nazim said that the committee has proposed 3 amendments and that the main amendment is the amendment on article 10 of the bill.

The amendment to article 10 proposes to waive the 50 signatories’ requirement for candidates contesting the parliamentary elections under the umbrella of a political party and to impose the 50 signatories’ requirement on independent candidates.

MP Nazim speaking on the other 2 amendments said that article 22 of the bill has been amended so that Majlis regulations may not be changed until elections are held and results announced. The other amendment is changing the 10 day period given to candidates to submit candidacy, to a 14 day period.

At yesterday’s sitting members proposed many amendments to the bill including amendments calling on to increase deposits levied on candidates from Rf.5000 to Rf.20, 000. A total 11 amendments were proposed.

In addition to the amendments, the bill is expected be put to vote at the Majlis today.
