Down payment on flats will be reduced – State Minister

Minister of State for Housing, Transport and Environment Aslam Shakir has given assurances that the government would make every effort to reduce the down payment of 488 flats recently allocated Hulhumale’.

Aslam said that as the rechecking of application forms are being carried out, he is unable to specify the amount to be deposited as down payment.
He revealed that all application forms are rechecked to ensure that people who received the flats are indeed eligible and no wrong doing has been carried out in the selection process. He said that he believed that the selection process was based on the information given on the application forms and that it was essential to verify the information given in the forms. He also said it is possible that winners of the draw may not get flats after the recheck.

HDC said that it may take a month or two to announce amount of down payment and as even if the winners of the draw are unable to pay the required down payment within 14 days the government will consider the financial capability of the respective individual and make necessary alleviations instead of disqualifying the applicant.

Aslam also declared the down payment cannot be waived off completely, as called for by some political parties, as it such action may cause HDC to go bankrupt.
