Felivaru declared as administrative centre of North Province

The cabinet on Tuesday has decided to make Felivaru as an inhabited island and declared the island as the administrative centre of North Province. The cabinet made this decision after deliberating on the issue at today’s cabinet meeting.

As part of the regionalization process, the purposes of establishing administrative centers were to enable administration of the regions in a democratic and accountable manner and to improve the living standard of the people.

Felivaru was declared as an inhabited island and made the administrative centre of the North Province because of its economic and cultural significance to the people of the North Province.

At today’s cabinet meeting, the members also discussed on the Information and Communication Technology properties and on ways of making efficient use of human resources in the IT field. The members of the cabinet noted the importance of establishing a computer network within government offices which would enable the implementation of e-government in the Maldives.

After deliberating on a paper proposed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Communication, the cabinet decided to do ICT assessment in all government offices and to standardize all offices in this field.

The cabinet also decided not to have the annual national theme for this year from 2009 onwards.

In addition, the cabinet discussed appointing information officers to government offices and on measures to be taken for the implementation of government’s policy on dissemination of information. The cabinet decided to form a ministerial committee to further review the matter.
