Govt. gives priority to introduce development banks - President

President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the government gives high priority to introduce development banks in the Maldives. The President made the statement while speaking to the people of Thoddoo on Wednesday. He visited the island as part of his ongoing tour of South Ari atoll. Speaking in this regard, President Nasheed said that the introduction of a development bank in Thoddoo would facilitate the people of the island to find long term installment loans.

President Nasheed said that the government was making plans to enable all stakeholders in the agriculture sector to store and sell their products in Male’ as well as provide easy access to Male’ harbor. He added that these plans would be implemented before the end of this year.

President noted that Thoddoo was renowned for its agricultural activities, and said that the government planned to develop agribusiness in Thoddoo.
Stressing that there were many constraints to the development of agribusiness in a sustainable and profitable manner, President Nasheed said that the government was seeking ways to overcome such handicaps. Further, the President said that the government recognized the need to establish easier means of transportation to Male’ and said that the government transportation system would be implemented in mid this year.

President Nasheed also informed that as part of the government’s housing policy, at least 100 flats would be built in Thoddoo.

During his visit to Thoddoo, President Nasheed inquired about the needs of the people. He also visited Thoddoo School.
