May elections will not cause a constitutional void - Speaker

Speaker of the People’s Majlis Mohamed Shihab has stated that parliamentary elections in May will not cause any constitutional issues and that the country will not face a constitutional void.

Speaker Shihab’s views are supported by Male’ MP and Leader of the Social Liberal Party (SLP) Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra).

Speaker Shihab and MP Ibra said that they were full aware of what the constitution says and that the ongoing speculations on country facing a constitutional void, if parliamentary elections are not held before the 15 th of this month and the elected Majlis does not convene on the 1 of March, does not have any legal basis. He said people who are talking about it in such terms are being very narrow -minded.

Ibra said those who went to court on the matter of the constitutional void were unable to prove their case. He said interoperations and assessment based on a single article of the constitution will not be accurate and that accurate assessments and interpretations is only possible after careful consideration of all the related articles of the constitution.

Mohamed Shihab said that his previous statements throw light on the matter and that a careful study of the articles of the ‘green constitution’ will indicate such a constitutional void is not possible even if parliamentary elections are not possible in February this year. He said the articles of the green constitution are very clear and that it will not be changed by mere speculations.

“The period of the transition is 2 years, there is still one complete year before the constitutional term of the sitting Majlis will elapse” he said. He further said that constitution also stipulates how things can be done when constitutional deadlines are not achieved.

Speaker Shihab has said that the best way will be to complete things within the dead line called for but that there is no benefit to be gained if matters were to be hastened.
