Names proposed for Elections Commission rejected

People’s Majlis on Wednesday has rejected the names proposed by political parties for the vacant seat in the 5 member Election Commission.

In the vote taken in the Majlis, members rejected the names proposed by 3 political parties to the vacant seat in the commission. Ifham Hussain from Gaumee Party, who obtained the highest score from the 7 member Majlis adhoc committee tasked with scrutinizing the candidates, received 16 votes in favor while 17 members votes against and one member abstained.

Abdulla Muaz Yousuf nominated by Jumhoory Party (JP) received 28 votes in favor while 25 members voted against and 5 members abstained. In the vote taken on Ismail Hassan Manik, 25 members voted against while on 2 members voted in his favor. 7 members abstained.

Members speaking at the Majlis yesterday expressed that that rejection of the proposed names was deliberate act aimed at delaying the oncoming parliamentary elections. According to the constitution, candidates need a two third majority of the members in attendance in order to succeed.

Speaker of the Majlis Mohamed Shihab informed that work to elect a member to the election commission will be renewed and will continue. He said every effort will be made to speed up the process.
