Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Naseem has called on the international community to build a future in which socio-economic development and poverty eradication can be realized without sacrificing the common ecosphere.
According to foreign ministry, State minister made the statement at a panel session held on the 7th of February at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit.
State Minister Naseem urged the important need to construct a new reality in which the pursuit of each goal- economic growth, social equity and environmental protection- should not be seen as mutually exclusive but rather as mutually reinforcing. As such, he applauded the holding of the Summit as a move in the right direction towards harmonizing global efforts against the dual needs of preserving the environment and steering economic development.
He warned that we must not allow ourselves to lose sight of the third side of the sustainable development triangle- namely social equity and brought to fore the key issue of fair access to much-needed technology to curb the negative impact of economic growth on the environment. In this regard, State Minister Naseem proposed that technologies must be made available to all within a global regulatory system that respects and rewards innovation and enterprise while ensuring the results and benefits are made available to the many and not just the few.
According to Foreign ministry State Minister drew attention to the mistakes made in the past and noted that advocacy should go hand in hand with action and achieving practical goals. He closed his statement with an affirmation of the will of the newly-elected democratic Government of the Maldives to concertedly work with the international community in the area of sustainable development and climate change.
