Elections Commission (EC) has revealed that when the deadline for submission of credentials of candidates seeking to contest forthcoming parliamentary elections lapsed as of 1500 hours on Sunday 22 of March, some 472 candidates submitted credentials to contest 77 seats in the new parliament to be elected under new constitution.
Director General of the Elections Commission Mohamed Tholal speaking to Miadhu Daily said out of the 472 candidates, the commission has accepted 465 candidates as eligible. Tholal said the remaining 7 candidates are not eligible. He revealed that out of the 7 who are not eligible 5 are independent candidates and 2 are from political parties. The 465 candidates, whose credentials have been accpeted and declared as eligible by the Elections Commission, include211 candidates from 11 political parties and some 254 independent candidates, Tholal said.
Tholal further said the Elections Commission is currently rechecking the names of candidates who are eligible to contest the forthcoming parliamentary elections and that lucky draw to be held among the eligible candidates will be on 1- 2 of April. Names of candidates with their respective constituencies will be announced on 5 April and voting will be on 9 of May, he said.
Director General Tholal noted that this is first election in the country’s history where such a large number of candidates are contesting. He said when the period to submit discrepancies or errors in eligible voter list expired 140 complaints were filed and that 214,405 people are eligible to vote in oncoming parliamentary elections.
