Shaheed says he played key role in toppling former govt.

Incumbent foreign minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed has said that he played a key role in toppling the 3 decade old government of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Noonu MP Abdulla Yamin and that this fact was well know to the people.

He made the statement to Miadhu Daily while commenting on the article posted in Miadhu Daily on a parliamentary probe in to allegations raised by Islamic Democratic Party (IDP) accusing the foreign minister of accepting a US $ 2 million bribe for recognizing Kosovo independence. The parliamentary probe is conducted by National Security Committee of the Parliament which includes Noonu member Abdulla Yamin and Meemu member Ahmed Nazim.

“What I have to say is, that my share in toppling the age old government of Abdulla Yamin and his brother Gayoom is significant, the people is aware this, the Maldivian people is aware that Abdulla Yamin and Ahmed Nazim is fully capable of carrying out an ‘unbiased and fair ‘ investigations of an issue which clouds my name and dignity. The people will also know that Yamin will want to carry out the investigations” Shaheed said.

Further Shaheed said Kosovo independence was recognized as the country’s population is over 90 percent Muslims. He said in recognizing Kosovo independence principles and best practices of international diplomacy was observed and no wrong doing was involved in any stage.

He expressed that parliamentary national security committee instead of investigating the matter in closed doors environment should hold investigations in an open environment where the public and media are invited. He said the public has a right to know the truth.

“It will be better to hold investigations in an open environment with the public and media present instead of closed doors investigations, then only will the public know the truth” Shaheed.

Shaheed further said the concern here should not be on the recognition of sovereignty of a Muslim state but concern should on the influences of an enemy of a Muslim state on the country’s politics.

According to reliable sources Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has close links with Serbian Otpor Organization which is providing political support and training to MDP officials. Political experts believe that this may be the reason for the slow government response to IDP allegations.

Government first announced its decision to recognize Kosovo independence on 21 January 2009 and foreign ministry Dr. Shaheed first met Kosovo opposition leader Behgjet Pacolli on 27 January 2009, according to informed sources.

Islamic Democratic Party early in March alleged that senior government officials accepted a US $ 2 million dollar bribe to recognize Kosovo independence.
