The President of the Maldives to visit the Speaker Swedish parliament, the Hon.Riksdag Per Westerberg
The President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, will be received on Tuesday 16 June by the Speaker of the Riksdag Per Westerberg. Anders Ygeman and Claes Västerteg, Chair and Deputy Chair of the Committee on Environment and Agriculture will also join the meeting. The President will also meet the Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Göran Lennmarker. President Nasheed is visiting Sweden in order to receive the Anna Lindh Prize for Maldivian efforts to place human beings and human rights in the centre of the debate on climate change.
Per Westerberg was elected as Speaker of the Riksdag after the parliamentary elections in 2006. He has been a member of the Riksdag for the Moderate Party since 1979.
In 1991-94 under the non-socialist government he was Minister for Industry, Employment and Communications.
In the Riksdag he has been chair of the Committee on Industry and Trade and of the Committee on Environment and Agriculture and deputy chair of the Committee on Transport and Communications. He has also been a member of the Committee on EU Affairs for several years.
Per Westerberg is a graduate economist. He is married to Ylwa and has four children. His main leisure interests include his boat and being in the archipelago, travel, motorbikes and historical literature.
