Over US $ 5.9 million worth of trade was carried out between Maldives and Pakistan last year, according to Pakistan High Commission in Maldives.
Speaking at a press conference held at Dharubaaruge , attended by the members of the visiting Pakistan Trade Delegation , Acting Pakistan High Commissioner to Maldives Dr. Jamaaluhdheen said the key objective of the Pakistan trade delegation was to further strengthen trade relations between Maldives and Pakistan as well as find out investment opportunities in Maldives.
“Looking at trade activities carried out between the two countries, in 2006 approximately US $ 3.4 million worth of trade were done, in 2007 , trade between the two countries increased to US $ 4.7 million and in last year trade in excess of US $ 5.9 million was carried out” Dr. Jamaaluhdheen said.
Pakistan High Commissioner to Maldives said his countries trade delegation includes representatives from 16 major companies in Pakistan and that they will seek out investment opportunities in Maldives. He highlighted that trade between the two countries was expanding and increasing day by day.
“One of the main reasons for this is that Pakistan is an industrial and agricultural country, we do not export our agricultural products to other countries of the world but we also export industrial products for economic activities” Dr. Jamaaludheen said.
The members of the visiting Pakistan trade delegation, speaking at the press conference noted that despite the flourishing trade relations between the countries, trade relations between the two countries were not that friendly.
“Even though trades relations was improving, we have this gap between the two countries and trade relations needs to be more friendly, we want to get eliminate this and fill the gap, this can only be achieved by exchanging information and improving relations between the business communities of both countries “ members of visiting trade delegation expressed.
Pakistan High Commission have said Maldivian traders wishing to commence trade with Pakistan can meet the members of the Pakistan visiting trade delegation on Tuesday from 1600 – 2200 hours and 0800 – 1000 hours on Wednesday.
