DRP Elections are not free and fair

Abdulla Yaameen, former senior member of the DRP has said that the elections within the DRP are not free and fair. His comments came as the DRP is gearing up preparations for the party’s national congress to be held later this month.

Speaking to media, Yaameen, half-brother of DRP’s leader and former president said that the fact that even the leader of the party could be elected without an election is simply undemocratic. Yaameen’s party, Peoples Alliance, however elected him as its leader without any competition.

However, Yaameen agreed that the current ruling party MDP’s internal democracy is more established and is more transparent than any other party in the country. He also noted that the MDP’s presidential candidate and current president is the only candidate who won nomination from a party primary. DRP has already elected party’s leader, leader of the women’s wing and leader and deputy leader of the youth wing by default as only one candidate is competing for the posts while the congress have not even begun. However those positions would be endorsed by the congress.

DRP’s new leader would be Ahmed Thasmeen Ali and women’s wing’s leader is Dhunya Maumoon while the leader and deputy leader of the youth wing is Ahmed Mahloof and Ghassaan Maumoon respectively
