Largest congregation join Friday prayers on the first Friday of President Nasheed's presidency

A record number of worshippers joined at Friday prayers today held at the country's biggest mosque, Masjidul Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanul Auzam. The afternoon prayers were conducted by one of the renowned Islamic scholars, Adalath party key member Sheikh Ilyas Hussain. New President Mohamed Nasheed , Islamic Affairs Minister Dr. Abdul Majeed Bari and some other ministers attended the prayer. This is the first Friday after President Nasheed assumed office on Tuesday since winning the first multi-party presidential election of the country The congregation was the biggest so far which is an indication of the trust given by the people to the new government for strengthening the faith and principles of Islamic faithfully followed by the hundred percent Muslim country. The people were also eager to see their new president join in the Friday prayers with them and have the pleasure of meeting and greeting him. Major General Zahir appointed as National Security Advisor

President Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has appointed Major General Mohamed Zahir as the National Security Advisor. He was previously the Chief of Defense Force, while Brigadier Moosa Ali Jaleel who previously held the position of Vice Chief of Defense Force was appointed as the Chief of Defense Force. Following the resignation of Commissioner of Police Adam Zahir, President Nasheed appointed Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Faseeh as the Commissioner of Police. The three appointments were made at a ceremony held at the President’s Office yesterday evening. Speaking at the ceremony, President Nasheed urged the three newly appointed officials to fulfill their responsibilities in a just and lawful manner. Highlighting that a majority of the Maldivian population comprised of youths, President noted the necessity to prevent such issues as violence and drug abuse in the country.
